During the 1960s redevelopment began in earnest on the city of Long Beach. Old homes and hotels along the ocean front were slated for demolition and replacement by new high rise buildings. Also, the serious problem of subsidence, which was caused by subterranean oil drilling off the coast in the Wilmington Field, was solved by pumping sea water into the empty wells in the sixties. Land in and near the port of Long Beach had sunken drastically, in some cases as much as twenty feet, but now the area was proclaimed safe for skyscraper construction that would tower above the beach.
