 LONG BEACH HERITAGE AND THE COMMUNITY CELEBRATE SPRING WITH MAY DAY 2009
WHO: Long Beach Heritage WHAT: May Day 2009 Celebration WHEN: Saturday, April 25, 2009, from 1 to 5 p.m. WHERE: Bembridge House and Drake Park 10th/Park Circle and Maine Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90813 COST: $2 for the tour, free to children under 13, accompanied by an adult; free for park activities Join Long Beach Heritage and the local Willmore City/Drake Park community in celebrating the fourth annual "Spring Into May" May Day 2009 from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.
In what promises to be a fun-filled spring day for families and friends, May Day 2009 will take place at Drake Park and the Bembridge House Homesite, located at 10th Street/Park Circle and Maine Avenue on the city's west side.
Throughout the day, docents will lead guests on a tour of the historic Bembridge Homesite and newly restored carriage house with emphasis on the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake. Cost of the tour is a $2 donation for adults; children 13 and younger get in free. A DVD of past living history tours will be set up for viewing in the carriage house.
At the park, the day will include a number of free activities. A traditional May Pole dance led by the Narodni International Folk Dancers and the Dalmation American Club Dancers. Crafts, games, face painting, a children's book give-away, and chances to win prizes will also be offered. The Long Beach Firefighers Association, Local 372 will serve hot dogs and chips beginning at 1 p.m.
Highlight of the Day at the Park will be a Health Fair sponsored by St. Mary Medical Center. Emergency and Earthquake Preparedness Information will be available courtesy of the Long Beach Chapter of the Red Cross and a representative from Long Beach Cares.
May Day 2009 is co-sponsored by Long Beach Heritage and the Bembridge House Homesite, Long Beach Parks Recreation and Marine, Willmore City Heritage Association, the Willmore City Community Police Center, Friends House at Drake Park, St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach Firefighters Association, the Narodni & Dalmation International folk Dancers, House of Hope San Pedro, the Honorable Mayor Bob Foster and Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal.
